Coldwater River

Location: Freeport Area

  • The Coldwater River, spanning 19.4 miles, is part of the Grand River drainage basin, meandering through Barry and Kent counties in Michigan. Originating from the Little Thornapple River, it flows north before curving westward to join the Thornapple River. Managed by Trout Unlimited and Michigan Nature Association, it's renowned as an exceptional trout stream. Supported by grants from The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Sustain Our Great Lakes program, the Coldwater Rivershed Council aims to boost the trout population from 40 to 800 fish per mile. Introduced several years ago, the Gilchrist Creek brown trout, alongside Rainbow Trout and Brook Trout, thrive in its waters.
